A flexible engagement model

Tailored to fit your needs and how you operate

We play a
Flexible Role

We work alongside CEOs and their teams to drive execution and results.  We provide experience, expertise and wisdom based on years in leadership and operating roles, across dozens of companies.

You can count on us to bring independence, objectivity and honesty. However, we also bring humility, understanding and flexibility in the roles we play.

Our goals are to deliver results, make your teams better, and work ourselves out of a job while leaving you stronger that you were before we worked together.

There are 3 roles we typically play for our C-suite clients:

Fractional Executive (CXO)

Working on the business and in the trenches with you to drive outcomes.

  • Integrated into your leadership team

  • Defined operating role

  • Accountable for business outcomes

  • Managing people & resources

The "X" in CXO stands for "X-Factor", "Xtra Executive" & "Xtra Brain and Xtra Hands" to get things done.

Consultant

Working for you or your team to deliver a specific solution and/or project result

  • A "resource" to one or more teams

  • Problem, solution, question focused

  • Responsible for deliverables

  • Tightly defined scope

We operate independently, with other consultants, or can source, build and manage a full function project team for larger engagements.

Advisor

Providing you advice and expertise about the business on an ad-hoc basis

  • A flexible resource to one or more C-Level leaders

  • Provide advice, counsel & expertise

  • Less rigid scope

We can also serve on corporate boards or special purpose advisory boards.

We engage with a
Flexible Approach

Because your business is unique, the approach we use to deliver results for you is also highly tailored to your company and team needs.

For every engagement we develop a unique scope, statement of work (and deliverables) and approach specifically tied to the outcomes you need to achieve.

Where appropriate we leverage standard methodologies and frameworks to reduce time and friction and improve predictability. However, we can also map our work to internal methods that you use and have been proven effective.

Finally we have a broad network of professionals we work with, across most operating disciplines within tech companies, and will frequently bring in outside resources who have the most appropriate methodology and skills that you can leverage. Our Three Things Resource network can accelerate outcomes at an optimized cost.

Our process for deciding to work together usually follows a simple 3 step approach:

tick (1).png

An easy Initial Conversation

We start with an Initial Conversation or meeting.

We talk about your situation, needs and critical goals. We get to know each other and discuss how we could work together.

By the end of this call we will know if we can help you, or if we could refer you to someone better qualified.

A Discovery Engagement

The next step is a Discovery Engagement to better identify challenges you face and make tangible  recommendations to improve results.

We do a high level analysis of the business; consider various market and operational factors; review key product and financial issues; and talk with key team members.

We will provide a situational assessment, and make recommendations on what you can do to improve focus and execution.

This is a free standing deliverable and does not obligate you to move forward on a larger engagement.

A Focused Engagement & Results

The Discovery Engagement recommendations will be translated into objectives and key results. Those, in turn will be translated into execution plan(s) across the organization.

Communication and reporting for the teams will be defined so that progress against your 3 priorities may be tracked and monitored.

We work as a member of your leadership team and as a confidential advisor to you, offering input and methods for improving execution and results.

The goal of our engagement is to deliver results, but leave your team with the tools and methods for ongoing execution.

We offer a
Flexible Fee Structure

Finally, we tailor the compensation structure we propose to match our client's needs and the value we deliver.

There are 3 standard models we typically use based on the nature of the work. Each has specific advantages and each has a built in pricing structure to provide incentives for volume and scale.

Finally, we are typically asked if we consider shared risk/reward compensation (we consider equity offers in this type of arrangement) and we WILL consider those compensation models for a portion of our fees provided they truly share both risk and reward.

Typical Fee Structure falls into 3 categories:

tick (1).png

Monthly Retainer

We typically offer monthly retainers for our Fractional Executive work, or when the monthly scope of work may vary in nature or quantity.

Monthly retainers are often structured around a set of days or hours, and can be tailored to manage a client's expense needs. The actual work, deliverables and results may vary period to period based on an overall plan and desired results but the expense may be flattened.

Project-Based Fees

For tightly defined scope and deliverables defined around a specific business goal, a project-based fee structure is recommended.

Payment can be based around planned milestones or deliverables.

We can work independently, or as a prime contractor, with additional project resources working for ThreeThings or billing through us.

Standard Time & Materials Fees

T&M fee structure is frequently best for ad-hoc or advisory consulting where scope is not well defined and the CEO is looking for flexibility in seeking advice and feedback.

We offer a Bonus Superpower - the Three Things Resource Network

When driving a business to the next level and solving new problems, you frequently find yourself needing to expand your knowledge or expertise, or get very specific advice. However, you don't want to add a full-time team member. But finding that right talent can be time consuming and costly if you get it wrong.

When we work together, we don't pretend to be experts in everything, nor do we want to be. But over 35 years we have built an amazing professional network that we tap into for our clients' benefit. This network is a force multiplier that helps us scale our Client's businesses.

Our Resource Network is comprised of former colleagues, clients and Provisors members who we "know, like and trust" as like-minded and experts in their fields. We can simply refer talented professionals directly to you, or contract with them as part of a team we build for you.

In our current network we can refer 2-3 (or more) high quality specialized professionals we have worked with in all of the following business categories and competencies:
